Equity returns seesawed throughout the third quarter as investors digested shifting trends in news headlines. The quarter began with upbeat corporate earnings reports, the capping of the leaking oil well in the Gulf of Mexico, and positive results from stress tests of European banks. In August, however, on weak economic data, sentiment quickly turned negative and equities sold off. The quarter finished on a high note, as central banks around the world convinced investors that they stand ready to act.
